The word ‘cleaning’ is the one of the most frequently typed words into Google. Why? There could be and are many reasons. People are looking for a cleaner to clean their property. People want to find out how to clean certain articles of furniture or clothing. People are looking for a cleaning business. The reasons are many and varied.

But why are people so fascinated by cleaning? Probably because it is something most people don’t like doing. There is a stigma attached to cleaning. Cleaning is considered to be a job for the uneducated and lower socio-economic section of society.

How did this come about? Mainly because it was always carried out by women who were uneducated and needed to make money for their family. Many young women prior to the beginning of the twentieth century worked in Service. This was a polite name for young girls who worked for the wealthy.

They helped keep the houses clean and tidy as well as working in the laundries and kitchens.

It wasn’t until around the beginning of the First World War in 1914 that these women had opportunities to work in other areas. By then education in the western world was mandatory for all children under the age of 14, so everyone could read and write.

Unfortunately, the stigma still remains that you have to be poor and uneducated to clean. Amazingly this couldn’t be further from the truth. I know many cleaners and these people are more than educated. I have met journalists, economists, physiotherapists, marine biologists and accountants who are cleaners. These people have degrees in their own countries but because of their lack of the local language need to take on cleaning.

Cleaning for someone else is different from cleaning your own home. It’s a job satisfaction thing. You go through the home and make it look great, then leave. You don’t see the kids and the animals come in and make a mess of all your hard work. And I guess that’s the problem with cleaning. It is never ending. No sooner do you tidy up and make the place look presentable, than the visitors arrive and make a mess, or you cook a meal and the kitchen is dirty again.

I had a lady tell me many years ago that one had to have intelligence to be a good cleaner. There could be a lot of truth to that. Commonsense goes a long way. But it is mainly having an eye for details. Noticing the dust and dirt and removing it.

Slowly the stigma attached to cleaning is lifting. More and more people don’t wish to waste their leisure time cleaning their home. And they are starting to realize that cleaning is a profession the same as the butcher and the plumber.

Yes the cleaning industry has changed, but the job done is the same. It has four different processes. First is dry compound. An absorbent is added. It is 98 percent biodegradable cleaning compound which is spread on carpet and brushed. Dirt is attracted to this compound while brushing the carpet then it is vacuumed off. Second process of Dry-cleaning is Encapsulation. In this process a crystalline residue is created that can be vacuumed immediately. The compound crystals dissolve and absorb the dirt before removal of the carpet. The cleaning solution is applied by a rotator machine, compression sprayer. The dry residue is vacuumed off and carpet comes out clean from the Dry-cleaning machine.

Third process in Dry-cleaning is Bonnet. In this club soda is mixed with cleaning product which is deposited to surface as mist or bonnet with rotating motion. The soil is attracted to absorbent and carpet comes out clean. However this process for Dry-cleaning is not recommended. The fourth and last process for Dry-cleaning is Solvent Extraction. In this D’Limolene based cleaner is basically sprayed on carpet before cleaning. The carpet is given 5 to 10 minutes to dwell. Then the carpet is extracted using acid rinse solution with help of hot water extraction machine. It cleans deep inside the fibres. The other methods are basically household methods. One the household process or method is Vacuum. For this a Vacuum cleaner is used. Vacuum Cleaner uses air pump which sucks particles and up in the Vacuum cleaner. Another method is Stain removal method. In this if ink has to be removed from carpet then lemon or oxalic acid, oil with white bread or pipe clay is recommended. If it insects has to be removed the Benzene and alum is recommended. Stain Removal products can also be used. Stain removal products can also be used along with anti allergen treatments which kill termites. Some other methods are Carpet rods, carpet beating machines, brooms, brushes, Dustpans, rattan rug beaters, dustpans. Some of these methods were used in 19th century.
